Mental Math Strategies Grade 2: Mental Math Strategy 1
The first mental math strategy is called “mental math strategy” because it involves using one’s mind to solve problems. This is not just a matter of memorizing numbers or solving simple arithmetic problems.
Rather, it requires one to think logically about how things work, which helps with problem-solving skills. For example, if one wants to figure out how many oranges there are in a box of 100 oranges, then one must use logic to determine what number of boxes there will be in the box. One does not simply look at the number of boxes and assume that it represents the total amount of orange juice. Instead, one uses some sort of reasoning technique such as counting up from zero (100) until they reach 100 (orange), then subtracting 10 from 100 (the number of boxes). Then, one adds up all the numbers between 0 and 100 (all the boxes) to get the total amount of orange juice. This method works even when there are multiple solutions to a problem.
Mental math strategies grade 2 is useful for those who want to learn more about basic mathematics. It is especially helpful for students who have trouble learning new concepts quickly or those who struggle with complex algebraic equations.
While there is nothing that can replace real mathematical instruction, this method can help struggling learners to better understand the material.
