Alternative to the Big 3 Lifts: The Guillotine Press

The guillotine press is one of the most effective upper body exercises out there. It’s not just because it works your chest, shoulders and triceps, but also because it builds great size and strength in all three muscles. You don’t need any equipment or special skills to do this exercise.

All you need are two dumbbells and some free time.

How To Do The Guillotine Press

To perform the guillotine press, stand with your feet shoulder width apart and hold one end of each dumbbell in front of your body. Place the other hand on top of the bar so that it rests against your chest. Slowly lower yourself down until you feel a stretch in your hamstrings or glutes.

Hold for five seconds and then slowly raise up again. Repeat 10 times.

Guillotine presses work your chest, shoulders and triceps, which are the major muscles used when performing this exercise. They build great size and strength in all three muscles.

How To Do The Shoulder Horn

Hold the two dumbbells in front of your body with your palms facing outwards. Slowly turn your wrists so the palms of your hands are now facing each other, but keep your elbows locked in position. Slowly turn your wrists back to the original position.

The shoulder horn works the muscles between your shoulders, most noticeably the area between and around your deltoids. This is a great exercise for working these muscles.

“I am not a meathead. I am a spiritual warrior, peace with the world and all that, but actually shooting stuff, hitting stuff with a hammer, stabbing people with a sword…that’s just fun.

Always has been.” You say.

“Well that’s good to hear,” Ant says walking over and handing you two more iron bolts. “You get the idea, you can use any crossbow you have or buy to simulate your bolts. I’d start with the lighter ones, then move onto heavier stuff.”

You nod and quickly load up the crossbows with bolts.

“Right then, let’s see it then!” Ant says as he hands you a bottle with a rag stuffed in one end and a bunch of holes in the other.

What’s this?”

You ask.

“It’s a homemade pepper bottle for your smoke bombs. When you shoot it, the rag will soak up the pepper juice and if the bottle breaks the juice will spray out. Soaked into a rag and tossed it’ll give your enemy one hell of a time breathing, especially if there’s a lot of it.

Just make sure you keep back so the fumes don’t get to you as well.

Ready?”

You raise your crossbows, aiming at the targets. You take a deep breath, before firing off both bolts, watching as they slam into the dummies, one after the other. The dummies are peppered with holes, the rag bursting and spraying juice everywhere. Ant nods as he watches from the side lines.

“Not too shabby…you’re a natural talent!”

You smirk.

What’s next?”

“Next,” Ant says, grabbing you by the wrist as he pulls you through the doors of the armory. “We pick up some swords.”

The armory is filled with weapon after weapon, each with their own history and story. There are axes from orc kin, tall tales told over mead in their own language. There’s blades of many races, from Man to Elven kin.

You spot a few blades even larger than yours, wielded by Chaos Dwarves or Goblin Mercenaries. Everything you see is a weapon suited to a warrior.

So which one are we getting?”

You ask, looking around the room.

“Actually, I think you need a bow. With how big you like your swords, I think a bow would suit you well.”

I’ve never used a bow before…I dunno if I could do it.”

“Just because you haven’t used one, doesn’t mean you can’t. Here, take this.”

Ant hands you a longbow, incredibly rugged and strong, crafted from the wood of several trees. You hear the sound of wood snapping behind you, as Ant smiles.

“This bow is perfect for you. It’s incredibly strong, but also elastic enough that it’ll still be fun to use. Here, have a try.

Just pull back the string and let go. Remember to aim. The targets are on the far wall. Don’t worry about shooting me or anything, I’ll be behind you the whole time.”

Taking a deep breath, you pull the string back, taking aim at the target. You pause, noticing that your fingers are in front of the target.

“You’re holding it wrong,” Ant says, stepping beside you. “Let me show you. Your fingers should be like this, not straight.

It’s aching after a while, but it puts your hand in a better position.”

Ant gently moves your hand into a better position. You raise your bow again, taking aim. You pull the string back once more…then pause.

What am I supposed to be shooting at?”

“Anything you like. The target is a bag full of hay, but the idea is just to enjoy shooting.”
