Starting BJJ

Now that you’ve picked out a BJJ school, it’s time to start learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu!

Whether you’re drilling the same technique for an hour or rolling for five minutes, there is something to be learned and it’s your job to find it. If you stop learning, someone else will take your place and it won’t be a good one.

It’s easy to get caught up in the “world” of Jiu-Jitsu and want to compete all the time. It’s important to take a break every now and then and just train for the fun of it.

Go in and work on your favorite moves or really try to perfect the ones you’re not so great at. If you’re constantly worrying about performing, you’ll burn yourself out. Everyone needs to go through the motions every once in a while, even professional athletes.

Don’t be afraid to branch out. There’s more to Jiu-Jitsu than what you learn at your academy.

There will be times when you’re training that you think you can’t go on. You’ll be tired.

You’ll be sore. It will seem as though it is impossible to go on. However, you must remember the bigger picture and keep your mind focused on it. The desire for success should be greater than the negativities of fatigue and pain.

It is very important to pace yourself in every match or training session. Many times beginning students, and even some intermediate and advanced students go way over their heads and get themselves into situations that are too tough for them.

This may satisfy their ego in the short term, but it will do nothing for their development in the long term.

This is not to say you shouldn’t strive to achieve things that are challenging for you. However, there is a big difference between setting realistic goals and being reckless.

It is important for you to support your training and your lifestyle, not endanger them

Many students fail to realize the importance of “down time”. This is the time when you’re not specifically training jiu-jitsu.

This would include, days off from training, days where you only do light training or days where you don’t even train at all.

Just as your body needs rest to repair itself from the rigors of hard training, your mind needs this time as well. Watching videos, reading books, taking walks, doing yoga or whatever it is you enjoy doing.

There is no set of rules that say you can’t try new things and continue to develop your personality through your jiu-jitsu career, whether this is on or off the mat.

You don’t need to be a loud outgoing person but you shouldn’t be shy and reclusive either. You can be a serious practitioner of jiu-jitsu and still have a good sense of humor.

Be yourself and the right people will like you for who you really are.

You cannot please everyone.

There will always be people that don’t like you for whatever reason. It is important to try to get on well with everyone but you can’t allow their opinions to cloud your own goals and desires.

If someone doesn’t like you, then they don’t like you. It is their loss, not yours.

You have to be willing to make sacrifices if you truly want to be a high level competitor and achieve all of your goals in the shortest amount of time. There will be times where you will have to choose between being with your friends and training.

You are not a slave to jiu-jitsu but if you want to be the best you will need to make sacrifices in your life so that you can make the most of your training.

You are going to meet a lot of people, some good and some not so good. You are going to experience a lot of things both on and off the mats.

It can be easy to get caught up in the moment and make a mistake, that one drunken night of indiscretion, that one act of greed, that one moment of desperation or that one mistake that you will forever regret.

You also need to be careful of whom you choose as role models. Everyone is going to tell you that they are the best and have what you need to succeed but in reality not everyone has your best interest at heart.

Think before you act and always try to make the right decision.

As with most things, jiu-jitsu is about balance. You need flexibility and strength, quickness and endurance, intelligence and instinct, calmness and rage.

You need to be well rounded in everything that you do and you can’t neglect any part of your life or training if you want to succeed in this sport.

In your journey of learning jiu-jitsu you will encounter many different people, all of who will try to show you various techniques. Some of these people have a lot of knowledge and really know what they are teaching while others are only good at trying to imitate the people that actually know what they are doing.

It is important for you to be able to sort through all of this information and only keep what works for you and discard everything else. Be open minded, but not to the point where anything goes.
