So, you’re interested in weightlifting huh?

Well you’ve come to the right place for all of your weightlifting needs. While this guide will go more in-depth about the ins and outs of weightlifting, we’ll first start with a brief introduction to everything you need to know about the sport.

What is weightlifting?

Well to put it simply, weightlifting is a sport that consists of the athlete attempting to lift a heavy object from the floor and put it above their heads. While this seems rather…well basic, there is a lot more to the sport than meets the eye.

Today, weightlifting consists of two major competitions: The Weightlifting Competition and the Powerlifting Competition. The only real difference between the two is the weight categories and how each athlete lifts. For a Weightlifting Competition, athletes will perform the Snatch and Clean and Jerk. For a Powerlifting Competition, they will perform the Squat, Bench Press, and Dead Lift. Each competition has their own following and group of fans.

Within each competition there are multiple “divisions” that the athletes can compete in. These divisions are based on weight and gender. While men and women can compete against each other, they typically participate in their own divisions due to the differences in strength between genders. Within each division, the athletes are also broken down into classes. These classes range from 0.5 to 3.

48kg – Under this weight category is the 48kg weight class.

56kg – The next division is the 56kg weight class.

62kg – Next up is the 62kg weight class.

69kg – After that we have the 69kg weight class.

75kg – Next up is the 75kg weight class.

Over 75kg – Finally, we have the Over 75kg weight class.

Classes:

A (0.5) – This class consists of athletes who are visually impaired.

B (1.0) – This class consists of athletes who have a physical disability but can still compete without assistive equipment.

C (1.5) – This class consists of athletes who have a physical disability and require assistive equipment to compete.

D (2.0) – This class consists of athletes who have a visual disability but can still compete without assistive equipment.

F (3.0) – This class consists of athletes who have a profound hearing impairment.

G (3.5) – This class consists of athletes who are deaf.

H (4.0) – This class consists of athletes who have a mental disability.

Classes A-D compete in the weightlifting competition and Classes E-J compete in the powerlifting competition.

Athletes are normally introduced to the sport in their local area by a friend or family member who participates in it. Once an athlete enters a competition, they must fill out a questionnaire that helps place them in the proper weight and ability division. The questionnaire consists of questions like:

What is your name?

What is your date of birth?

(Day, Month, Year)

What is your gender?

What is your class?

What is your weight?

What is your toughest lift in each of the following lifts and how much do you weigh when you perform it?

(Bench Press, Back Squat, Dead Lift, Overhead Squat, Overhead Press)

In order to get a general idea of where you should compete, we will look at your activity level. Please choose an option that fits you best.

This Year’s Championships

This year’s championships are being held in your home city, so you are going to get to experience the fun of watching them be held in person! You’ve never been able to go before, so this is a big deal for you.

You arrive at the stadium with your family. It’s much larger up close than it seemed on TV. There were many different events going on at once and they each had their own sections and large TV screens.

You and your dad take your seats and wait for the A Class men’s 90+ kilogrammes division to start. It’s the heaviest one, so the one to watch if you aren’t sure who the winner is going to be.

Lifting commenced and it was very fast paced. You had a hard time keeping up with the announcer, but that didn’t matter since the large screen had a counter on it for each lifter.

It was down to the last few competitors and you were wondering who would take the gold when one of the athletes got two whites. That means he missed twice and was out of the competition. You didn’t even realize that was an option! Everyone else had at least one red, which meant they had at least one successful lift.

There were three reds and two whites. One of the athletes had one red with one white. He should have one more successful lift, but he was going for the heaviest weight. He managed to get it overhead, but his knees didn’t lock and it looked like they were going to buckle. Everyone in the audience was holding their breath, including you.

His knees held long enough for him to drop the weight and send the judges a red light. Your screen changed to show that he had gotten third place.

There were still three red lights left and the heaviest weight was still in play. The first one to get a red light got second, and the last one was the gold medalist!

One by one the athletes struggled with the weight, but all of them failed to lift it and there were three red lights! You couldn’t believe it; you had never known anyone to get a medal before. Your dad was jumping up and down and you were on the edge of your seat the whole time!

After getting his medal, the announcer said that since there were so many people here today that were new to weightlifting, he wanted to give you all free passes to the gym where some of these athletes train. He said it was called the Stronghold and gave the address. It was only a couple blocks from your house!

Everyone around you started heading towards the exit, so you and your dad did too. On the way out you got a few autographs, one of the athletes asked where the Stronghold was so he could drop off his medal, and another gave you his sweat towel!

You, your dad, and the rest of the crowd walked over to the Stronghold. It was a pretty big building, but not nearly as big as some of the others around it. There were two big men standing out front and they let everyone in after looking at their passes. They didn’t ask for yours since you weren’t walking or driving a car.

You looked around inside and saw a lot of really big people doing exercises, some smaller people lifting weights, and even a track outside with people running on it! This place has everything!

Over the next couple of weeks, you managed to get to the Stronghold every day. You had a great time there and the people were really nice.

Your dad even managed to find a job there! He was a night janitor since there was no one else to do it, but it still got him out of the house and he said he might be able to get promoted later on.

You wanted to stay in the Stronghold as long as you could, but one day you had to go home because you needed to eat and there wasn’t anywhere else to get food around there.

When you got home, there was a letter waiting for you on the door step. You picked it up and looked at the envelope, it was a little beat up and had a lot of stamps on it, but the address was right so you opened it up and pulled out the letter.

It was from Mom and she sent you some money for school! She said she couldn’t affort to send much, but she wanted you to know that she loved you and hoped that you were doing well.

P.S. Your father moved out last week. I don’t know where he went, but if you can, try to find him so you two can settle your differences. I don’t think I can handle you two fighting any longer.

You were a little shocked to hear that, but you guessed that this meant you didn’t have to go home anymore!

After doing a little celebrating and heading out to get something to eat, you headed back to the Stronghold to get in a few more hours of lifting before they kicked you out for the night.

As you walk in, you bump into the owner, a big muscular guy name Frank. He’s pretty friendly to all the members and always jokes around with you, so you share a quick high five as you walk by.

“Hey Frank!” You yell.

“How’s my favorite little monster!?” He answers.

Frank notices the bag you’re carrying and asks what’s inside.

“Mail from my mom.” You say as you pull out the letter and show it to him.

“Aww how sweet, you can’t beat mom love.” Frank says. “Well you better get inside now before all the good machines are taken.”

You wave goodbye and head on in.

With unlimited access to a gym where you can lift as much as you want, and the ability to eat all the food you want, life is pretty great. You even have a whole new group of friends that are into the same stuff you are. It’s everything you dreamed of when you first started getting into this stuff.

Of course even in a place this great, something is bound to happen to mess it all up and cloud your perfect little world with doubts and questions…

Over the next few months, strange things begin to occur. People you see quite often suddenly disappear, only to pop up again after a few weeks with a different name and new look. At first you thought it was just someone messing around with you (once again), but then you started seeing familiar faces that have never visited the gym before.

After a while you notice that these people all have something in common. They’re all skinny and dress the same, could it be…?

Then one day you walk into the gym and see two people dressed in black preaching to a crowd in the corner. You’ve seen enough televangelists to know what’s going on here. It’s a save point.

These people are members of the Church of Joachim, a religion that has been gaining popularity over the past couple years and is now believed to be the second largest religion in the city (ancilla worshippers still holding strong at number one).

While they may have beliefs in different gods, and different interpretations of those gods, when it comes to these people you can always count on them to be close-minded, judgmental, and most importantly, really really creepy.

You quickly realize that you’re in the presence of some real supernatural believers, and they’ve most likely bought into all the rumors about inhabiting the gym. You watch as people begin to head to the altar and ‘confess’ their sins to these guys who simply smile and nod as they take all your worldly goods.

This is really starting to piss you off, not to mention it’s scaring off potential victims. If you want to keep eating, you’re going to have to do something about this.

You could try and reason with them like you usually do, but they’re pretty pumped up right now. It’s not really in your personality to back down from a fight though, so you might as well just try and scare them away.

You could also try to turn some of them into the police. Wouldn’t be too hard to do a lot of accusing with the state they’re already in. The problem with this plan is it would most likely bring law enforcement down on the whole gym, which wouldn’t be good considering how much illegal activity goes on here. You could just threaten to do it though to get them to leave.

You could also just try to scare them like you were planning to do in the first place.

On your way over you can only think of one thing that would make you feel better about this situation, so you head to the bathroom and take what you need from the medicine cabinet. You swallow a couple painkillers and antidepressants, knowing that they’ll help calm your nerves and keep you from shutting down due to panic.
