You’ve probably heard that certain weight loss programs have been proven to work and others don’t. Many times these claims are based on little to no evidence at all. In fact, there’s very little research into how dieting actually works and whether or not it’s even beneficial for anyone in the first place.

You see, weight loss has been considered a taboo subject in the scientific community for quite some time. There’s a conspiracy theory that the government only funds research that’s going to give them a reason to continue the war on obesity.

They need a reason to keep funding school lunch programs, health care initiatives and medicine that helps prevent obesity-related diseases. The sad thing is it might not be too far from the truth.

If you’re a researcher looking to get funding for your project then you better not be researching anything that goes against what the government wants.

And let’s face it, if you were in charge of allocating funds for weight loss research, would you fund something that might make people fat or would you rather fund something that helps people stay fit and healthy?

This is why there’s such a lack of information on what really happens when people go on diets. It’s also why there are so many weight loss scams out there. It’s not always the people running the scams that are to blame either. The person looking to lose weight is just trying to find a way to make it work because they don’t want to believe that something they’re doing might be completely hopeless.

As I mentioned, there are several different types of diets out there and most of them are ineffective for numerous reasons. Before we go any further, you need to ask yourself some questions about what you really want and why you want it.

Ask yourself if the reason you’re trying to lose weight is worth losing your life over.

The sad reality is that most people are doing it for all the wrong reasons anyway. They want to be able to wear cute clothes or look good on the beach.

Are those reasons really worth potentially shortening your life span?

The reality is that even if you are able to lose the weight, it probably won’t make you all that happy anyway. You’ll just end up right back where you started after gaining it all back and then some.

Some people might have a medical reason for wanting to lose weight and that’s a little different. Though in this case, you’re probably trying to reduce the symptoms of your condition rather than curing it completely.

For most people, continuing to have weight-related health problems is not worth it in the long run.

So what’s the alternative?

Well, there are two parts to it really and they both involve accepting yourself for who you are right now and loving yourself no matter what your size. Only then will you be able to free yourself from self-imposed limitations of what you think you can’t do.

Loving Yourself Regardless of Your Weight

For whatever reason, many people have a very difficult time with this simple concept. They feel like they need to punish themselves by denying themselves certain foods or subjecting themselves to extreme diets and exercises.

This isn’t something you have to do at all. In fact, it’s actually more beneficial to yourself if you don’t.

Food should be enjoyed and you should eat it whenever you get a hunger craving. Exercising should be something that you do because you want to, not because you feel obligated to.

This isn’t a concept that many people can grasp at first, but in time it will become second nature to you.

Set Small Goals for Yourself

Instead of setting a goal to lose “X” amount of weight within a certain time period, set smaller goals that are easily attainable. For example, if your ultimate weight loss goal is fifty pounds, then start by setting sub-goals that are five pounds each.

Once you reach one sub-goal, set another one that’s five pounds more than the last until you’ve reached your ultimate goal. This will keep you from getting discouraged and you’ll experience a sense of accomplishment along the way.

These smaller goals should be based upon things that are within your control. So for example, if you’re heavy because you eat junk food all the time, then one of your goals could be to cut out junk food altogether.

Another goal might be to walk for half an hour a day. These types of goals are manageable and you won’t feel so overwhelmed that you’re going to fail. You’ll know exactly what you need to do in order to reach your sub-goal.

You’ll be surprised at how much progress you’ll make if you just keep pushing forward in this way. Before you know it, those smaller goals will add up and before you reach your ultimate weight loss goal, you’ll realize that you’ve already met it.

If You Fall Off the Wagon, Get Back on

Nobody’s perfect. The most important thing is that you don’t let a mistake set you back too far.

Many people fail in their weight loss goals because they give up entirely after eating something “bad.” If this happens to you, it’s essential that you realize that a single meal isn’t going to ruin all your efforts.

So what should you do?

The first thing you should do is relax and try to forget about it. Remind yourself that one meal isn’t going to make or break you. Next, try to determine what it was that caused you to fall off the wagon in the first place.

What were you feeling that made you want to eat this food?

Try your best to ignore these urges in the future by keeping yourself occupied with other activities.

We all have those days where we feel like we’re at our weakest. Your best bet is to try to avoid these situations as much as you can.

If this still happens despite your efforts, don’t beat yourself over it. Just keep pushing forward and remember why you started your journey in the first place.

This may sound a bit counter-intuitive since one of the reasons for losing weight is because you no longer need to do this, but giving yourself rewards along the way is actually a good idea.
