Introduction: How to Train Your Balance in Martial Arts?

The most common question I am asked when it comes to balancing in martial arts is “How do I practice?”

Many times, people are not sure what they want to achieve with their martial art training or even if they have any desire to improve themselves. When someone asks me this question, my first response is usually something along the lines of “I don’t know.”

When I say I don’t know, what exactly does that mean? What do you want to achieve with your martial arts training? Do you just want to learn some cool moves or do you actually want to become a better person? If so, then why would you need to improve yourself in the first place? Why not just focus on learning cool moves and leave all other aspects of life out of it?

Well, there are many reasons why one might choose to improve themselves in the martial arts. Some people may feel like they have no interest in becoming a better person and thus would rather just enjoy the fun aspects of being a martial artist. Others may wish to pursue a career in the martial arts because they believe that it will provide them with greater financial security than their current job situation. Still others may simply want to improve their physical health through exercise and/or self-defense techniques. Again, all of these reasons are perfectly valid. The only mistake that can be made is not being honest with yourself about your personal motivations for beginning any type of exercise program.

In addition to knowing why you are training in the first place, it is also important to understand exactly what you want to achieve and how you plan to go about doing so. For some people, this may mean setting weight loss or cardiovascular health as a primary goal. For others, this may mean self-defense.

For others still, martial arts can be used to pursue various forms of competition such as tournaments. No matter what your reasons are for becoming a martial artist, it is important to remember that you can always achieve your goals most effectively by keeping your mind focused, your body flexible, and your spirit strong.

The first few times that you try it, you may very well find yourself wobbling back and forth out of balance. However, with regular practice, you’ll find that your mind gains the strength necessary to focus solely on the exercise at hand.

Increased Confidence: Practicing your balancing exercises can also be a great way to build self-confidence. The more you practice this skill, the stronger you’ll become and the easier it will be for you to accomplish. Soon, you won’t just be able to stand on one leg or remain in the lotus position with ease.

You’ll begin to feel more balanced and grounded throughout your life. This newfound confidence will carry over into other aspects of your life as well.

Flexibility: Perhaps one of the most overlooked benefits of your balancing exercises is that it will help to increase your flexibility. Whether you’re working on a dynamic exercise such as splits or a static exercise such as the full lotus, training these muscles will allow you to move through various yoga poses with more ease.

There are many benefits to practicing these exercises in your martial arts training. Not only will it help you to focus better, build confidence, and become a more well-rounded martial artist, but it can also help you to reach a state of total zen. Although many people skip these exercises in favor of more hands-on training, you’ll soon find that regular practice can take your martial arts skills to the next level.
