Background Edit

Born in San Diego, California, Dan Hollander attended MPS from kindergarten through sixth grade before dropping out due to poor grades.[2][3] He then moved to Edmonds where he attended EMSS from seventh through twelfth grade. At age thirteen he began attending a local church youth group run by his grandmother. There, he met a girl named Julie who would later become his wife. They were married in 1994 and lived together until Hollander’s arrest.

In 1987, his mother was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. She died peacefully in her sleep on May 12, 2009, at the age of sixty-nine. His father died of a heart attack on August 10, 2006, at the age of seventy-eight.

Hollander was a loner who kept to himself and did not have many friends during his time at both schools.

School shootings at Edmonds-Woodway High School (EWHS) and EMSS (1993) Edit

On the first day of school in 1993, sixteen-year-old Dan Hollander killed his English teacher and a student at Edmonds-Woodway before going to the middle school campus and killing two more students at Edmonds-Middle School. He then committed suicide by shooting himself in the head.

The first victim was forty-one-year-old English teacher, Mary Murphy, who taught at MPS and was a mother of five. [4]

The second victim was fifteen-year-old Ahmed Nasir, a student at the school. He was shot twice in the head while waiting for a bus to pick him up after his shift at Edmonds McDonald’s. According to witnesses, he was asked his name before being shot. One bullet went into his head, and the other into his chest. The shooter then entered a white Chevy Cavalier, abandoning his red-and-white Schwinn ten-speed bicycle at the scene.
