Featured Photographer: The U of MMA Photography Team

The U of MMA Photography team consists of three photographers. They are all professional photographers with different experience levels. All three have been working together since they were young and now they are finally ready to share their work with the world!

UofMMA Photography Team Member: Joe Cernak (Bachelor’s degree)

Joe is a graduate from the University of Missouri – Kansas City where he studied film & video production. After graduation he worked at several local news stations before joining the U of M’s photo department in 2003. His first assignment was covering the 2004 National Championship football game between Kansas State and Texas A&M.

Since then he has covered many events including NCAA Football games, concerts, sporting events such as the World Series, and even some special projects like the Olympic Games in Athens.

In addition to being a photographer for UofM Magazine, Joe is also a freelance writer specializing in sports photography. He has contributed to numerous publications including USA Today, Sporting News, Sports Illustrated and others.

He lives in Columbia MO with his wife and two children.

UofMMA Photography Team Member: Mike Pappas (Master’s Degree)

Mike is a graduate of the University of Missouri – Kansas City where he studied film & video production. After graduating he worked at various newspapers before joining the U of M’s photo department in 2003. His first assignment was covering the Kansas City Chiefs.

Since then he has covered everything from the World Series to the NCAA Tournament and several major sporting events in between.

In addition to being a photographer for UofM Magazine, Mike is also a freelance photojournalist. He has contributed to USA Today, Sports Illustrated, and many other publications. He lives in Kansas City MO with his wife and two children.

UofMMA Photography Team Member: Heather Coogan (Bachelor’s degree)

Heather is a graduate of University of Missouri – Kansas City where she studied photo journalism. After graduating she worked at several newspapers before joining the U of M’s photo department in 2006. Her first assignment was covering the Triple Crown races.

Since then she has covered everything from the World Series to the NCAA Tournament and several major sporting events in between.

In addition to being a photographer for UofM Magazine, Heather is also a freelance photojournalist. She has contributed to USA Today, Sporting News, and others. She lives in Kansas City MO with her husband and two children.
