The following are some of the most common metabolic problems:
1) Fatigue: You feel tired all the time.
You have no energy to do anything.
2) Weight gain or loss: You weigh more than you did before.
Your weight keeps increasing and decreasing over time. If you eat something, your body doesn’t absorb it properly, so it just stays in your system instead of being burned off as heat or stored as fat.
3) Insomnia: You don’t get enough sleep.
You wake up several times during the night.
4) Mood swings: You feel depressed or happy at different times of day.
Sometimes you even forget what day it is!
5) Depression: You feel sad all the time, especially if there’s nothing interesting going on in life.
Your mood changes quickly when you think about things like death, suicide, and other negative thoughts.
6) Anxiety: You have constant anxiety attacks.
They last from a few seconds to minutes, but they’re very uncomfortable.
7) Low blood sugar levels: You don’t have control over your blood glucose level.
It fluctuates wildly and you need to keep eating or drinking something constantly to prevent hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). This causes you to lose concentration and make mistakes in schoolwork or work. You may not be able to concentrate at all.
8) High blood sugar levels: You have the opposite problem.
Your blood glucose level is always high and never dips below the baseline. This makes you hyperactive and causes you to make many mistakes while working or studying. You may not be able to sit still for any period of time.
9) Slow metabolism: Your body doesn’t burn off food or calories fast enough.
Even when you don’t eat, your body still needs energy. To provide this energy, your body breaks down your muscles and internal organs for fuel.
Now let’s look at some of the main factors involved in the causes of metabolic problems.
1) Poor diet: Your diet consists mainly of fast food, candy, soda, and other high-carbohydrate or high-fat foods.
These are cheap and readily available everywhere. Even at home, you don’t know how to cook for yourself. Instead, you rely on junk food to get by.
2) Unhealthy lifestyle: You don’t exercise and just generally lead a sedentary lifestyle.
You sit at your desk all day at work and then sit in front of the TV for most of the rest of the day. You don’t have much muscle to weigh your body down, and your heart doesn’t have to work hard to pump blood around your body. This leads to increasing weight gain over time.
3) Lack of rest: You don’t get enough sleep at night.
Even if you go to bed early, you wake up feeling tired. If you could go back to sleep, you might not wake up feeling tired anymore. You have the yawns all day long and it’s hard to stay awake during boring lectures.
4) Mental problems: You’re depressed about your future or unhappy about something that happened in the past.
You could be having problems with your boyfriend or girlfriend. Sometimes, you can’t do anything about it and need professional help.
Now that you have a better understanding of your condition and the causes behind it, let’s look at some solutions to your problem.
The easiest thing you can do is eat healthier and exercise more. If you follow the food pyramid, you’ll get all the nutrients your body needs to function properly. As for exercise, try taking the stairs at work instead of using the elevator, go for a walk during your lunch break, or just play a sport that gets you off your butt (or your couch).
If diet and exercise aren’t enough, you can always go on medication. Most doctors will first prescribe diet pills to help you lose weight. They may also put you on cholesterol or blood pressure medication. If those don’t work, your doctor may refer you to a nutritionist or dietician to help you choose foods that are both healthy and tasty.
Finally, if none of the above work, your last resort is bariatric surgery. This is a last resort, and should only be considered if you’re severely overweight and at serious risk for health problems related to your weight. The surgery can be risky, and does have a long recovery period. However, many people do achieve lasting weight loss with this procedure.
Now that you’ve had a chance to think things over, you feel much better about yourself. You can start taking control of your life and your health right now. No more feeling ashamed or hiding out in the shadows. You’re going to go out and get the help you need so you can be around to watch your daughter grow up.
There’s no more to read, but this decision affects other parts of your life as well. Go back and make choices until you’re satisfied with the path you’ve chosen.
The Good Mother
You walk into the bedroom, where your daughter is still sleeping. You kneel down next to her bed and gently shake her shoulder.
“Sweetie, wake up,” you say.
Your daughter cracks open an eye and groggily asks what time it is.
“It’s early. I have to go to work now, but I wanted to say goodbye.”
“Oh… Kay…” she groggily replies.
You kiss her on the forehead, and your daughter falls back into a deep slumber. You grab your purse and walk downstairs. Before you leave, you scribble a note for your husband and stick it to the refrigerator with a magnet.
You get into your car and drive off to work. The parking lot at Sam’s is nearly empty this early in the morning. You see a man in an expensive suit pacing back and forth near your entrance. It’s Bob, the head of human resources for the entire chain.
“Thank God you’re here,” he says as you approach. “We have a huge problem.”
Bob leads you around the side of the building, where there are three men in neon vests measuring a large hole in the wall.
“I thought this place was supposed to be secure,” you say.
“It was! I don’t know how this could have happened. Last night, someone broke into the safe and stole nearly $10,000 in cash. They ripped out part of the wall and tunneled all the way over here before Jango caught them.”
You stare at the hole in disbelief. After a moment, you come back to your senses.
“This is bad… There’s cameras everywhere in that store. They’ll catch the robbers and then it’s only a matter of time before they trace the money back here.”
Bob looks at you and sighs.
“That’s what I’m afraid of…”
You look up and see the men watching you from across the street. You step behind the wall and pull Bob down with you.
“Those are the robbers!” you whisper.
How do you know?”
“I can tell by their outfits. Plus, there’s three of them and only two were caught on camera. I can’t let them lead the police here!”
Bob grabs your shoulders.
“Listen, I know you’ve been working too hard lately. This robbery incident is just the most recent in a string of stressful events for you. Maybe you need to take some time off to relax.”
“I don’t have time to relax!” you snap. “I have to get back to the store.”
“No, you don’t. Not anymore,” Bob says. “I’m firing you.”
I can’t be fired, I’m the owner!”
“You gave that position up years ago when you hired me as the new CFO. Since you’ve been here for less than a year, you won’t get any severance. Now, I suggest you go home before the cops get here. Remember, you have no connection to this store.”
As more people begin to pour into the parking lot, Bob shoves you out of the way and leads the three men around the side of the store. You try to follow them, but he blocks your way.
“I said go home! You’re not part of this anymore! I’m taking care of this! Now, get out of here!
Go! Shoo! Before you get caught up in this mess! I’ll take care of everything!”
You turn and walk away. You can feel their eyes on your back as you cross the street. After you get into your car, you watch as the three men in neon vests and Bob walk back around the building. Meanwhile, a crowd of onlookers has gathered around the store.
You wait a few minutes before you get out of your car and walk toward the front entrance of the strip mall.
The girl who works at the flower shop next door sees you and waves.
“Hi, Mrs. Smith!” she yells.
Panic crosses your face for a moment. You completely forgot that you used your real name to set up the Sam’s Club account. Then, you remember that you’re not really married and that you still have a credit report in your old name. You wave back at her.
Hi, how are you doing today?”
she asks when you reach her.
“I’m doing great, sweetie!
How are your classes going?”
She smiles and starts going into detail about her college courses. You smile and nod, but don’t really listen as you scan the parking lot for Bob’s car. When you don’t see it, you head inside.
You spend a few minutes strolling slowly through the aisles. You pick up a package of plum tomatoes and read the label. It seems like a normal tomato. It looks like a normal tomato.
It even weighs the same as a normal tomato. But, it doesn’t taste like a normal tomato. Instead of tasting sweet and juicy, it has the flavor of wet cardboard. You throw the tomatoes into the trash and decide to wait outside for Bob.
After about fifteen minutes, you see Bob approaching. He’s by himself. You decide to get this over with quickly so you can go home and wash off the day.
Where are the men in neon vests?”
“They had to leave.
