East River Outdoor Gym
The East River Outdoor Gym, is an outdoor gym built along the East River. The outdoor gym includes pull up bars, dip bars, monkey bars, a bench press, a slackline, and more. The gym extends from Montgomery Street in the North to Dover Street in the South.
The outdoor gym was built by a partnership between the East River Fitness Club and the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. The purpose of the outdoor gym is to get more people active and encourage fitness in a fun and social setting. The outdoor gym also offers free community exercise classes.
“I think it’s a great addition to the neighborhood,” says one local resident. “Easy access to free equipment is a blessing.” The East River Fitness Club is open to everyone in the community, it’s a non-profit organization supported by user fees and donations.
Their aim is to make fitness equipment freely available to everyone. “We don’t want cost to be a barrier to fitness,” says Club President, Camila Herrera. The outdoor gym is the brainchild of Camila, who wanted to expand the reach of the Fitness Club. “There are so many people in the neighborhood who don’t have time to go to a gym, or can’t afford one. We wanted to make fitness equipment readily available so they can get in shape and lead a healthy lifestyle.” The outdoor gym is completely free for everyone to use. However, the East River Fitness Club does ask that you join their organization. You can register for a small fee of $15 dollars a year. Joining gives you full access to all of the Club’s services and gyms. If you can’t afford this fee, you can get it waived by filling out an application and getting approved.
