Friday Flicks: Fedor Emelianenko MMA Highlight

Fedor Emelianenko was born on August 17th, 1983 in Makhachkala, Russia. He began training at the age of 7 with his father Vladimir (who is now retired).

At the time he had no idea what he wanted to do with his life; however, after watching some fights of Royce Gracie and Ken Shamrock, he decided to become a fighter himself. After several years of training, he won the Russian Championship and later became a professional. His first bout was against Igor Vovchanchyn at UFC 1 in 2001. He lost via TKO but it started his rise to fame as one of the most popular fighters in the world today.

He’s fought all over the world, including Japan, Mexico, Brazil and the United States. Most recently he defeated Antonio Silva to win the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix title in May 2011.

Since then he’s been a mainstay on the UFC roster where he holds victories over such names as Frank Mir, Quinton Jackson and Dan Henderson. He currently has two children from previous relationships.

He’s got a very short, stocky frame and is incredibly strong for his size. His wrestling and judo abilities are top notch and he has a fantastic cardio system.

In short, he’s one of the most athletically gifted fighters in the world today. Add that to his ability to take punishment and you’ve got one of the toughest fighters out there.

He fights for the First Russian Martial Arts Academy in San Jose. Arguably the best MMA camp in the world, it’s produced such fighters as Jon Jones, Lyoto Machida, Keith Jardine and Gegard Mousasi, just to name a few.

His training partners are all top notch and really help him prepare for each fight.
