This is most likely because they require more expensive steel and other materials to make them. For example, a 25 pound (10 kg) barbell costs around $70 while a 25 pound (10 kg) dumbbell only costs about $20.
Another difference is that barbells are designed with both hands in the same position, while dumbbells can be held in different positions. For this reason, some people may find dumbbells easier to use since different exercises can be performed.
Also, since there are more moving parts in a barbell, it has a greater chance of getting damaged or even broken. This can cause you to have to buy a new barbell.
So which is better between a barbell and dumbbell?
Well, that’s all going to depend on what you’re trying to achieve. If you want to build more muscle mass, then go with the barbell.

The equipment is only limited by your imagination. You can mix and match exercises with different types of equipment for endless possibilities. Picking the right weight training equipment is very important as it can make or break your routine. You want to make sure that you have all of the right tools before you start, because once you begin, there is no going back.

Equipment can be categorized in a few different ways but I like to break it down into three types, “free weights,” machines and body weight. Free weight equipment is everything that doesn’t come with an included machine.
Barbells, dumbbells and weight plates all fit into this category. Naturally, there are a few subcategories; barbells can be straight or EZ curl bars for instance. Machines on the other hand all work together to perform one movement. While working out using only free weights can be dangerous, machines are very safe as they don’t allow you to move in a way that would cause injury.
Body weight is everything you need to exercise your body without any equipment at all. Pull-ups, dips and sit-ups all fall into this category.
The best way to start is by learning the right technique for each exercise then slowly adding more and more weight. Before you know it, you’ll be turning heads at the gym and getting tons of girls checking you out.
Barbells & Dumbbells
Barbells are the longer of the two with weights (called “plates” to keep the bars balanced) screwed onto either end. The longer bar allows more room to add more weight, which makes it the primary exercise tool in most gyms.
There are a few different types of barbells; standard, EZ curl and trap bars. All of them perform the same function but some people may feel more comfortable with one over another.
EZ curl bars are just that; easy to curl. They have a slightly larger diameter than standard bars making it easier to grab the ends of the bar and lift.
EZ curl bars also usually have knurling across the top to make them even easier to hold on to. This knurling can cause issues with sliding plates however so keep that in mind.
Trap bars have a center ring that the weight plates sit inside of instead of on the outside. This means that you can stand in the middle and pick the bar up from either side.
Trap bars are good for exercises like shrugs that you would otherwise have to throw you off balance by picking the weight up off to the side.
