How to Choose the Right BJJ Coach For You

The following are some things that you need to consider when choosing a coach:

What do they have to offer?

Do they have experience with teaching?

Are their students satisfied with their training sessions?

Is it safe to train at their school?

Does the school provide enough classes per week or does one have to attend all of them regularly?

What kind of atmosphere do they create?

How much time do they spend on coaching?

Do they teach only one style of jiu-jitsu?

Can I see them compete?

Are they available to their students?

A good coach will be able to answer all of these questions with ease and without sounding suspicious. People who can’t answer questions easily are usually hiding something or are not good at communicating.

One more thing is that an instructor should have a lineage from another instructor; it doesn’t matter which one, as long as he has a lineage from another one. This is very important because it shows that he or she has been trained properly.

A person who was not trained by another person, but instead learned the moves from a book or a DVD, is not what you want to train with as they lack the personal instruction and attention that are essential to your learning process.

We also discuss why people should choose the best brazilian jiu-jitsu school. The answer to that is pretty easy: because it’s the best!

The History of BJJ

How to Choose the Right BJJ Coach For You - Picture

The year is 1882. European colonists were starting to settle in Brazil.

They brought with them the favorite sport of the time: Greco-Roman wrestling. The only problem was, the colonists were incredibly unskilled at it, losing to the Brazilian natives every time. In an attempt to level the playing field, Portuguese diplomat Luis França and his associate Pascoal Carlos Barreto created what is now known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Barreto was the one who actually taught the martial art, while França organized matches and charged admission. The art started to spread across the world, even reaching Japan!

It wasn’t until 1933 that a man named Mitsuyo Maeda was appointed as the Japanese ambassador to Brazil. To impress his host country, he took four of his most skilled Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu students (including a man named George Gracie) to Japan and had them compete in a series of challenge matches.

The Gracies succeeded in winning and the art became vastly popular in Japan. It was then further developed by another student of Maeda’s, a man named Hélio Gracie. He made the sport into what it is today by adding new techniques such as the use of chokes and pins to defeat an opponent.

There are many styles that have branched off from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with more developing as time goes on. There’s a lot of focus on self-defense and sport fighting with an opponent, depending on the teacher.

It has also become an Olympic sport in the Summer games of 2016!

How We Chose the Best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi’s

The very first thing we did when coming up with this list is determining what exactly makes a great BJJ gi. We knew it couldn’t just be the brand or the design, but there had to be something special about it that made it better than all the rest.

We came up with 4 main factors: Quality, Durability, Aesthetic Appeal, and Price.

These are the 4 qualities we based our ranking system upon, and each brand was given a number ranging from 1-10 in each category. Quality and Durability are both reflection on the material and design of the gi.

Aesthetic Appeal is just self-explanatory, while Price takes into account both the cost of the gi itself as well as the price of any additional features such as extra patches or colours.

All of these numbers were added up to create a final number, which was then ranked from lowest to highest.
