How to Make and Use Vertical Pull Up Bars (Video)

DIY vertical pull up bars are a great way to get in shape and improve your strength. They’re simple to put together and require no special tools or skills. You don’t even need any power tools! If you want to build one yourself, here are the steps:

Step 1: Choose Your Material

The first thing you’ll need is plywood. Plywood is available in different thicknesses. For example, there are various types of 2×4 boards that can accommodate many different heights. You’ll need to choose the type of board that will best support your weight.

If you’re looking for something lightweight, then you might consider using plywood with a thickness of 0.062 inches thick. These boards are usually used for flooring and furniture because they’re light enough to transport but strong enough to support their own weight when assembled into a structure.

On the other hand, if you’re looking for something more heavy-duty, you could use plywood that’s 0.25 inches thick. You’ll need to make some adjustments to your dimensions (which we’ll get to later), but this will give you a sturdier pull up bar that can hold more weight.

Keep in mind, the thicker the material, the more wood you’ll need to buy. And the more wood you have, the heavier and more expensive it gets to ship.

Step 2: Cut and Drill Your Pieces

You can cut your pieces from the plywood sheet using a band saw, jigsaw or other hand tools. Then, you can start assembling them together using 3 inch wood screws or bolts and washers (if using bolts).

You’ll want to use plywood that has the same thickness throughout. For example, you don’t want to glue two pieces of 0.25 inches thick plywood sheets together and then apply a decorative wood veneer on top to create your pull up bar because the center of your pull up bar will be much weaker than its edges.

Step 3: Assemble Your Frame

You will need to assemble a rectangular frame using your wooden slats. The dimensions of the frame should be about 2 feet by 4 feet, but you can customize them to your liking. The most important thing is that the frame is sturdy enough to support your weight.

Step 4: Attach It to the Ceiling

There are many ways to do this, but the most effective method is to use a pulley system that’s attached to your ceiling joists. This will allow you to move your pull up bar out of the way when you’re not using it.

You can easily construct a pulley system using bearings and ropes. There are online resources available that explain how this is done, and you can even find videos that demonstrate the process.

Step 5: Install Hand Grips

Hand grips can be installed on your pull up bar using bolts and lock washers. You can then add padding for extra comfort.

That’s about it. If you want to save yourself some time and money, you can always hire a professional woodworker to build one for you. You should be able to find one online if you do an extensive search.

A. You could try doing chin ups instead. They’re more or less the same as pull ups, but your palms are facing towards you instead of away from you. Most door frames are usually about the right width to do chin ups in.

Q. I’m currently in the middle of building my pull up bar, and I ran into two issues. The first one is that wood screws keep ripping out of the plywood base because it’s soft and low quality.

What can I do about this?

A. You can try using a cordless drill and drill holes into the wood before putting the screws in. This will prevent them from ripping out.

The other issue is that the metal brackets that came with my bar are too wide to fit between the studs in my wall.

What can I do?

A. Hopefully you bought metal brackets that are adjustable. If they are, then loosen all of the screws, and move them closer together. This should allow them to fit in the narrow space between your wall studs and should prevent your pull up bar from falling down.

If they aren’t adjustable, you’ll have to buy new metal brackets that have a smaller width. The problem with this is that most hardware stores don’t sell metal brackets that aren’t adjustable. Your other option is to drill extra holes into the adjustable metal brackets so you can make them smaller.

Q. My pull up bar keeps on falling down!

What should I do?

A. This is probably because your wall brackets aren’t tight enough. Try to brace the wall as best you can with something like a piece of wood or a couple of books, and then tighten the screws until they don’t budge when you give them a gentle push. You might also need to brace the wall above the brackets as well to prevent your pull up bar from falling forward.


What if my door frame isn’t quite big enough for me to do pull ups in?
