Joel Freeman

Joel Freeman (born September 4, 1976) is an American mixed martial artist. He competes under the name “The Ultimate Fighter” (TUF). His TUF appearances have included fights against such notable names as Rashad Evans, Joe Lauzon, Josh Koscheck and Frank Mir. He was also one of the contestants on season 14 of The Ultimate Fighter where he lost to Mike Pierce. He made his UFC debut at UFC 93 where he defeated Chris Leben via unanimous decision. Since then, he has gone 5-0 with all five wins coming by knockout or submission.

Freeman’s professional MMA record stands at 6-2 and includes victories over some of the most recognizable names in the sport including: Nate Quarry, Josh Koscheck, Frank Mir, Roy Nelson and Matt Mitrione.

He has been married to Breanne Freeman since August 13, 2010. They have two children together named Elijah and Isabella.

Youth Career

He started wrestling when he was in 3rd Grade at the insistence of his older brother. He didn’t enjoy it at first but as he got older, he began to love the sport.

He would go on to become a 3-time NJSIAA State Qualifier and won 2nd place at the NHSI Nationals. In High School, he didn’t have much success as his size (or lack thereof) prevented him from competing at a high level.

He eventually enrolled at The College of NJ (now Stockton University) where he became a 5-time NJCAA National Qualifier. He finished his Junior College career with a 2nd place National finish and an All-American honors.

After winning the NJCAA National Championship as a Senior, he transferred to the University of Oklahoma. In doing so, he became the first NJCAA wrestler in nearly 20 years to make such a jump. He was a 2nd-team All-Big XII selection as a Senior after going 30-9 and winning the Big XII Championship. He finished his career with an overall record of 131 wins and 48 losses.

His brother John F. Cantlay also wrestled at OU and was an All-American for the Sooners in 2001 & 2002.

While training for the Olympics, he injured his back severely and needed multiple surgeries. This injury ultimately robbed him of the quickness and flexibility he needed to be a world-class wrestler.

He retired from wrestling in 2007.

After his wrestling career ended, he began jogging and eventually training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He started training at the Valko BJJ & MMA Academy in Hanover, New Jersey under head instructor John Valko and assistant instructor Keith Denk.

He amassed a 5-0 amateur record before turning professional.

He made his professional debut on October 28, 2009 at Ring of Combat VII: Invasion where he defeated Tom Gallicchio via submission (rear-naked choke) in the first round.

Joel then fought two more times that year, winning both fights by submission.

In 2010, he fought two more times, both victories by TKO.

In 2011, he fought three times with a 3-0 record. He won two of those fights by submission and one by TKO.

In 2012, he fought three times again with identical 2-0 records. He won two fights by submission and one by TKO.

In 2013, he fought twice again with identical 1-0 records. He won both fights by submission.

After an eight-year absence, he returned to the MMA cage on May 2, 2018 at Ring of Combat: Champions where he defeated David Honeycutt via Unanimous Decision.
