The cause of nausea and heartburn during pregnancy is not fully understood. There are several theories, but no one knows exactly why it happens.

You will probably find that you are able to tolerate these foods in small amounts during the first few days of your pregnancy. As the weeks pass, you will probably find that you can eat more and more and it is not uncommon for women to have a sudden increase in their appetites during the seventh or eighth month of their pregnancies.

As for beverages, you are probably going to find that you are able to tolerate water better than anything else. If you find that the acidic taste is still bothering you then you can add a little sugar to it (but not too much because this can also cause nausea) or even drink it straight from a glass milk bottle.

Also, if you are getting sharp pains in your stomach along with the nausea and vomiting, you can try sucking on ginger candies. These can be purchased at your local grocery store and come in either a crystallized or candy stick form.

You can experiment a little bit to see what types of food that you tolerate without experiencing the unpleasant symptoms. One important thing that you will want to pay attention to is how often you are eating.

You don’t want to eat too much, nor do you want to go too long without eating.

It is always a good idea to write down everything that you eat and drink along with any other symptoms you are experiencing. This will help your doctor if you should need to see her for some reason.

Also, if you are going to change your eating habits then you should write down what they are going to be before you start so that you don’t get off track. It is very easy to do this if you have prepared a list ahead of time.

Other than the nausea and vomiting which will gradually go away as you progress in your pregnancy, there are some other common discomforts that you might experience during the first few months. These include:

Gestational diabetes – You are more likely to develop this. It can cause you to experience rapid weight gain and excessive urination.

As well, you may find it difficult to tell when you are hungry or just thirsty. If you haven’t been keeping track of what you eat and drink before, now is a good time to start so that your doctor can monitor your condition.
