What Are Adaptive Thermogenesis Symptoms?

Adaptive thermogenesis (AT) is a term used to refer to the body’s response to changes in energy balance. What Causes Adaptive Thermogenesis Symptoms?

AT occurs when you restrict your caloric intake, when you start a diet or exercise program. In fact, even a bout of exercise can cause AT in some people. It’s important to realize that not everyone experiences AT to the same degree. Some people may be more sensitive to weight loss than others.

But why do some people experience AT and others don’t?

Researchers have identified several mechanisms that cause AT. Changes in thyroid hormones, insulin levels and several other hormones are responsible for AT. Changes in the number of fat cells are another cause of AT. Finally changes in the nervous system also contribute to AT.

Naturally, all of these changes occur because your body wants to maintain homeostasis. When you start eating less calories than you burn, your body tries to balance the energy equation by decreasing energy output (metabolic rate). The more you restrict your calories, the lower your metabolic rate becomes.

What Are The Consequences of Overcoming Adaptive Thermogenesis in Your Body?

When people talk about “starvation mode” or “metabolic slowdown”, they’re referring to the consequences of over coming AT. When you start eating less than you burn, your body tries to maintain equilibrium by lowering your metabolic rate. This results in significant weight loss. At this point, you may feel like your body has “shut down”, because weight loss has become very difficult. It’s not really your body that’s shut down though; it’s just a side effect of your body trying to maintain energy homeostasis.
