Weight lifting during pregnancy is not a bad idea. There are many benefits of it. However, there are some drawbacks too. If you have been thinking about starting weight lifting while pregnant then you may want to reconsider because it could harm your baby’s health if done wrong.
The Benefits of Starting Weight Training While Pregnant
There are several reasons why you might start weight training while pregnant. Here are just few of them:
You’re trying to lose weight and you don’t want to gain it all back after giving birth. You’re worried about gaining too much weight and getting sick due to excess amount of calories. You’re concerned about the possible complications of pregnancy and you want to avoid those. You’re having trouble finding time to exercise during your work hours.
All these reasons make sense but they aren’t necessarily true. Let’s see what are the facts behind all these claims.
Losing Weight During Pregnancy Is Easy – No Problem!
It is easy to lose weight while pregnant because you get enough nutrients from food and water intake during pregnancy. Your body is in overdrive mode and it will be burning that stored fat (as well as any other fat you eat) like crazy. You will also be eating for two which means you have a lot more wiggle room when it comes to overeating.
However, this isn’t an excuse to pig out on junk food. Eating healthy during pregnancy is the best way to get your body back into shape after giving birth. Sure, you will be able to lose weight easier than before but gaining those extra 50lbs is going to take more than a couple of months to burn off.
Gaining Too Much Weight Can Make You Sick
This is a fact. Pregnancy weight gain and diabetes during pregnancy go hand in hand. Gaining too much weight can cause preeclampsia which is a serious condition that can put both you and your baby’s life in danger. Gaining too much weight as well as gaining it too fast can also cause toxemia. This is why you need to discuss your weight gain with your doctor on a regular basis.
Too Much Exercise Can Be Dangerous
The general advice from doctors is to avoid exercising too much during pregnancy. This doesn’t just apply to lifting weights. Strenuous exercises such as running and aerobics can cause health problems for you and your baby. However, you can do some light exercises such as walking, swimming and yoga.
Too Much Exercise Can Also Prevent Birth!
This is a fact that most women don’t know. Exercising too much (especially at a high intensity) can prevent labor contractions from starting which means your baby will not be born anytime soon. Obviously, you want this to happen as soon as possible so that means you have to take it easy during the later months of your pregnancy.
However, this doesn’t mean you can’t exercise at all. You just have to keep in mind that overdoing it can cause serious problems. If you really want to start lifting weights then you will have to reduce the amount of weight that you lift as well as the number of reps you do. Be sure to consult your doctor about this to get his approval first before starting your new workout plan.
