Ricky Lundell is a jiu-jitsu black belt under Ricardo Almeida. He was born in New Jersey and raised in Pennsylvania. His father is from Brazil and his mother is American. He started training jiu-jitsu at age 13 when he moved with her to Florida where she worked as a waitress. At the time, there were no academies in Florida so he trained at a local gym called BJJ Revolution. He made his first promotion to brown belt at 16 and has been competing professionally ever since.
He trains out of Gracie Barra’s academy in Fort Lauderdale, FL. He is known for having a very aggressive style which includes submissions and ground fighting techniques such as chokes, arm locks, leg locks and other submission holds.
His nickname is “The Predator” because he is known to take down opponents and submit them. He is one of the few competitors that have won multiple world championships. He has also competed at ADCC, Abu Dhabi Pro Team Trials, Pan Ams and many others.
In 2011 he was named one of the top 10 female grapplers in the world by Brazilian Top Team magazine.
In February 2015, he released a DVD set entitled “Tournament Legitimation” with fellow instructor and brown belt, David Aguzzi. The DVD set is a compilation of techniques that can be used in all levels of competition including beginner, intermediate and advanced.
In July 2015, he was promoted to the ranks of red and black belt by Professor Aguzzi. He was one of two people promoted on the day. The promotion came as a surprise to him and everyone else at the academy.
In 2016, he won the No-Gi World Championships in the purple belt division.
He teaches self-defense classes at a local gym in the off-season.
In addition to his grappling success, he is known for his long hair and beard. He has been growing it out since he was a teenager. His long hair has become his signature look.
It is part of what makes him an identifiable figure in the sport. In an interview with FloGrappling he was asked if he ever considered cutting his hair. He said “Beard, back and hair all together would be pretty sweet but then I would have to walk around naked all the time. So I think I will just keep it long for now.”
He is very close with his mom, who has always been supportive of his career. As a child, she would take him to the park to teach him wrestling moves. He said “My mom has always been my number one fan and supporter, I think she would have been proud of me no matter what I did in life but being a professional athlete is something that makes her even prouder.”
In the off-season, you can find him at his local gym teaching self defense classes. He is also a substitute teacher in his hometown.
He has a son who was born in 2012. He said “I have a son now so I of course have to set the best example I can for him so that he grows up to be a good man, not just for himself but for others too.”
He is a member of the MAL Club which stands for “Married Athletes League”. It is a group of professional grapplers that are married to each other. It was founded by UFC fighter, Anthony “Showtime” Pettis and his wife, World Champ Cara Boyle.
Other notable MMA fighters that are part of the group include UFC fighters John Dodson and Tecia Torres.
He has been invited to train at the Atos headquarters in California by former coach and founder, Andre Galvao.
Teammate and friend, AJ Agazarm has helped him improve his wrestling game. He said “AJ really helped me with my wrestling. He’s got great wrestling so I learned a lot from him.”
He has a great relationship with Coach Tom DeBlasse and credits him for his success. He said “Coach DeBlasse has taught me so much about the mental game as well as the physical game. He has taught me to believe in myself and that I can beat anyone.
It doesn’t matter if they are bigger, faster or stronger than me, all that matters is that I have the heart to fight and that’s all he ever needed to see.”
Fun Fact: He once broke Marco ‘Musaka’ Castro’s nose with a flying knee during a sparring match.

Wrestling camps. He attends several wrestling camps during the year which are taught by former Olympian Kenny Monday. “At wrestling camps, I learn new techniques that I wouldn’t be able to learn otherwise.
It’s like going to school except I’m actually learning something”.
Wrestling Clubs. He also attends wrestling clubs to sharpen his wrestling techniques. He trains at clubs ran by former NCAA champion David Aubrey and former Oklahoma State University coach John Smith.

Random Fun Fact: He appeared on an episode of Shameless (US Version) that aired on January 13, 2016. He had a minor role as a SWAT officer.

Fun Fact: He owns a $5,000 Purple Weight Vest that he uses to strengthen his endurance.

Fun Fact: He rides a Razor Scooter to training. He is often seen scooting around between classes and to the MMA gym.
