Science Says: Post Workout Meal Not Necessary (PWN)
Post workout meals are not necessary unless you’re training hard and need to replenish your energy stores immediately. If you have a long day ahead of you, it’s better to take time off from training than to rush into something that could put unnecessary strain on your body. A post workout meal will give your muscles a little extra fuel so they’ll last longer during exercise or when recovering between sets.
It’s true that some studies show that post workout nutrition helps athletes perform better. However, there are other factors at play such as how much rest you get between workouts, how many calories you consume before and after training, your overall dieting plan and the type of activity being performed. So while there may be a benefit to consuming a post workout meal, it won’t make up for all the disadvantages associated with doing so.
There are two main reasons why you shouldn’t eat anything right after working out. First, your body doesn’t have enough time to absorb nutrients properly. Second, your body is still digesting the food you ate the night before.
Your stomach may feel full but it’s just going to hold onto whatever it can until your next meal or snack. You might think that eating a quick snack would be okay since you’re already tired and hungry, but that isn’t necessarily the case.
Your digestive system needs a chance to rest so it can store as much food as it can for later use. If you keep eating right after a meal, it’s not going to have enough time to do its job. Not only will your stomach continue to be full, but your body might start storing fat instead of burning it off because it doesn’t know when it’s going to get food again.
This is especially true if you eat a large meal within two hours of working out.
Your body can only process so much at one time and eating in close proximity to training is a big mistake. You might feel like taking the edge off your hunger, but it’s not going to be worth feeling tired and worn out during the day. Starving yourself isn’t a good way to lose weight.
You may notice a short-term change, but you won’t see any long-lasting effects or improvements. Your body will eventually adjust to a new eating schedule and store nutrients as energy.
If you’re always focused on your next meal or snack, then it’s not going to matter if you eat before or after a workout. You shouldn’t be so concerned with when you eat, but rather how much you eat instead. If you want to make sure you don’t pass out during training, you need to consume the right amount of nutrients and calories on a regular basis.
