4. Leverage Barbells

Also known as ‘Curling Bars’ these are barbells that consist of a very short, hollow metal bar with an even shorter metal rod attached by a very flexible metal connector. These are used for a specific type of weightlifting where great force is applied to the ends of the metal bar to lift a heavy metal ball. These types of barbells are not commonly used for any other purpose and are even rarer to find in commercial gyms.

Barbell Sizes

1. Standard Barbells

As mentioned previously, standard barbells are 7ft (2.13m) long. However a 7ft barbell is rather difficult to store and transport which is why they are rarely found in commercial gyms. Around 6 or 7 ft is the most common size and the same length as an Olympic Barbell.

2. Olympic Barbells

As described in detail above, these are the type of barbell you will typically find in a high-end commercial gym. They are the heaviest, most durable and most expensive. They are usually 7ft (2.13m) long and their weight varies depending on their materials.

3. Training Barbells (Variable)

4. Leverage Barbells (Fixed)

As described in detail above, leverage barbells are a niche option for a specific type of weightlifting. They are the cheapest and lightest but also the least durable. They usually do not extend beyond 5ft (1.52m) in length.

Barbell Sleeve Types

The sleeves of a barbell are the parts that the weight disks, or plates, are secured into. The main factors that differ between each type of sleeve type are the amount of weight they can hold and the amount of space they take up on the bar. For example a pair of plastic sleeves can hold the same weight as a pair of metal sleeves but take up half the space.

1. Metal Sleeves

A standard 7ft (2.13m) long Olympic Barbell will usually have 2 metal sleeves, with the smaller diameter end having a smaller circumference and therefore holding less weight. However a smaller circumference also means they take up less space on the bar. The larger end usually has a larger circumference and therefore holds more weight.

2. Plastic Sleeves

As mentioned above, plastic sleeves are smaller than metal sleeves in everyway but they make up for this by being able to hold more weight due to their stronger material. A standard 7ft (2.13m) long Olympic Barbell will usually have 2 or 3 plastic sleeves.

3. Colored Sleeves

Colored sleeves are used to mark a change in weight increment for weightlifters. For example a weightlifter may be working their way up to lifting the Olympic Weight Class of 85kg. To do this they may increase the amount of weight on the bar by 5kg each week. To make these weight increases easier the bar can be marked up with colored sleeves. For example, each time they add a 5kg increase they switch to a different color sleeve.

4. Bearing Sleeves

Bearing sleeves are similar to metal or plastic sleeves in that they hold weight and slide over the bar. The difference is, bearing sleeves have a ball bearing inside them which means they rotate much smoother than other types of sleeve. The main benefit of this is it means the lifter will be able to lift the weight smoothly and with more control.

Barbell Collars, Wrist Straps & Chalk

Barbell Collars – Also known as Lockers, the collars secure the weight disk (plate) to the bar. They have a spring-loaded latch that opens to allow the plate to be placed on then closes securely around it. This prevents the plate sliding or moving out of place during exercise.

Wrist Straps – Wrist straps are used to increase grip strength by attaching them to the bar then hooking your wrist through them. This means you can hold heavier weight than you could with just your hand because if you lose your grip the straps will catch you, preventing a failed lift and possible injury.

Chalk – Chalk is a powdered substance that is applied to the hands to help keep a strong grip on the bar. It prevents the bar from slipping due to sweat and moisture, meaning you can hold heavier weight for longer without fatigue.

Barbell Rack/Cage

A barbell rack or cage is a structure that contains the barbell to stop it being dropped so it doesn’t get damaged or cause injury if it fell on the floor. They are usually just a few poles tied together in a square or hexagonal shape with rope and wire to tie the bars to them.

When not in use the bar is placed in the rack so it’s elevated off the floor and out of the way but still secure so it can’t be stolen. They can also be used for storage by placing plates in them.

Barbell Collars

Also known as lockers, the collars are secured on each end of a barbell plate to prevent it from sliding or moving around on the bar. The collars have a spring latch that opens to allow the plate to be placed on then closes securely around it.

The collars are especially useful if you’re doing something like a deadlift where you might need to drop the bar during your set. If you don’t use collars and you drop the bar it could roll or slide across the floor, causing injury or damaging the flooring.
