So, after reading the above articles, you should have a better understanding about what the paleo diet is all about. Now, it’s time to take it one step further by reading a detailed book review about the best-selling paleo book of 2014 – The Paleo Approach.
The Paleo Approach: Reverse Autoimmune Disease and Heal Your Body
This book was written by Sarah Ballantyne, a woman who suffered from an autoimmune disease for 10 years. She cured her scleroderma disease through diet and lifestyle changes, and has since dedicated herself to helping others get rid of their ailments through the healing powers of food.
In this book, she reveals her own personal journey with autoimmune diseases, how she came to reverse her disease through diet and lifestyle changes, and how it is now possible to prevent and cure many of our society’s most debilitating auto immune diseases through changes in diet.
This book shows you how the human body was designed to function, and how a combination of modern lifestyle choices and Western diets are causing epidemic levels of autoimmune disorders. In particular, it focuses on how food can either prevent or trigger autoimmune disorders.
She explains in great detail the real cause of autoimmune disease, how most doctors get it wrong and often make it worse, and how you can easily change your diet to help achieve optimum health.
The Paleo Approach focuses on three main areas: Eliminate potential triggers, introduce effective healing foods, and remove harmful foods from your diet.
In Part One, the book explains what an autoimmune disease actually is and how it is different from a virus or infection. It also explains the various kinds of autoimmune diseases, their symptoms, and how they are caused.
Part Two is dedicated to showing you how to eliminate potential triggers, including how to monitor your health using a few simple tests at home. It also explains the three main factors that cause most autoimmune diseases: intestinal permeability, toxic burden, and hormone balance.
In Part Three, the book shows you how to heal your body with a Paleo Approach, including which supplements to take and which foods to eat. It focusses on the six healing mechanisms: removing food toxins, eliminating intestinal permeability, repopulating the gut with beneficial bacteria, reducing systemic inflammation, eliminating stress and addressing other lifestyle factors.
In Part Four, the book explains the 60 recipes you can use as a part of the Paleo Approach, including sauces and salad dressings, breakfasts, soups, smoothies and juices, fish and seafood, meats, vegetables and salads, fruits, nuts and seeds, sweet treats and basics. Recipes are included for everything from pesto mayonnaise to almond meal bread and chai spice tea.
In Part Five, the book puts it all together and explains how to implement the Paleo Approach into your daily life. It gives you advice on how to get your family involved, how to eat out, how to travel, how to deal with social events and holidays, and answers common questions people ask about the Paleo Approach.
This book has a total of 272 pages in full color with tables and graphics to further explain the concepts being taught.
What’s good about this book?
There are a lot of books out there that explain what foods you should eat and what foods you should avoid. The problem is that most of these books only focus on one dietary theory, and thus can’t give you the full picture. The Paleo Approach is different in that it focuses specifically on the Paleo diet, and explains how you can tweak that diet to eliminate food toxins and reduce intestinal permeability while balancing your hormones and reducing inflammation.
The book also explains how people with different conditions should implement the diet, such as those with thyroid issues, those who are pregnant or nursing, those who have had bariatric surgery and those who want to exercise intensely. With this information, you can tailor the diet to your individual needs, which makes the Paleo Approach more of a template than a strict diet plan.
What’s not so good about this book?
There are a couple of things that I don’t like about the book. The first is that there are a few too many typos and grammatical errors, which can be distracting. For example: “In the case you have Hashimoto’s, most of your symptoms should start to dissipate within two weeks.” (should be “disappear”, not “dissipate”)
The other complaint I have is that while this book gives a lot of information on how different conditions can manifest in different ways, it doesn’t give specific information about each and every disease. For example, while the book explains that heart disease can manifest as a pain in the chest or feelings of pressure and stress, it doesn’t explain what those specific feelings feel like, or which condition they are common to.
What about the science?
Going into a detailed explanation of the scientific research that makes up the Paleo Approach would take more than just this review. However, if you’d like to see that explanation, you can find it on my website by following this link.
Is this book for you?
The Paleo Approach is like the bible of Paleo. It goes into extreme detail on how different diseases can manifest and how your diet can affect them. If you are looking for more than just a book that tells you what foods to eat and what foods to avoid, this is the book for you.
However, if you are just starting out on your journey to better health with Paleo, this may not be the best place to start. I would instead suggest the 21 Day Sugar Detox, or The Paleo Approach Cookbook. Once you’ve had a chance to get familiar with the Paleo diet and how it can help you, come back to this book and its greater explanation of the Paleo diet, toxic food chemicals, disease and how to fix them.
