Now that I’ve told you about some of the benefits of sand dune running, it’s time to get started. But before you do, you should visit your doctor and get a full physical. Make sure that your doctor gives you the go ahead before starting any sort of rigorous physical activity.

Once you’ve got the green light from the doctor, you can start doing some basic running on sand. Remember to take it slow and don’t over do things. Especially at first, because your muscles are not used to this kind of activity and will become sore. The key to sand dune training is progression. So start with a few laps around the base of a small dune and then slowly build up from there. Make sure that you are well hydrated before, during and after your training sessions.

Another very important factor to keep in mind when sand dune training is that you will become dehydrated very quickly in the hot sun. Keeping a supply of water with you at all times is absolutely vital for your survival. So make sure that you always have a water canteen close by.

You won’t be running very far or very fast if you die of dehydration out in the desert!

Running On Sand Is A Great Way To Get Some Exercise

In addition to being fun, running on sand has many health benefits as well. It strengthens your bones and improves muscle tone. It also increases your lung capacity and cardiovascular strength.

As you continue to run on sand, your stamina will increase along with your leg strength. Your body begins to adapt very quickly to this sort of training.

So if you’re looking for a way to get into great shape and have fun doing it, start running on sand dunes today. You’ll be in great physical condition before you know it. As your conditioning improves, you can increase the difficulty of your runs.

Try running up and down the sides of dunes. The steeper the slope, the more of a challenge it becomes. But be careful not to over do things on the steep slopes or you may risk injury. Another thing you can do is run with a parachute behind you (attached to a chute that’s buried in the sand). This will add resistance to your body as it moves through the air and it increases the degree of difficulty. This is a great way to add a new challenge to your training.

Appropriate Sand Dune Activities:

So now that you know how to train, it’s time to start having some fun out there. Remember, training is only fun if it doesn’t become a chore.

To help you with this, we’ve come up with a list of appropriate activities to enjoy while you’re at the dunes:

1. Building sand volcanoes

This is great fun for the whole family. Make a giant pile of sand and then make it erupt like a volcano! This is perfect for little kids and even adults will have a good time doing it.

Be sure to pile your sand in a wide shallow bowl so that the top of your volcano is at the same level as the surrounding landscape. The wider and shallower the bowl, the higher your volcano will be.

2. Finding Fossils

The San Bernardino Valley has been a vast desert for millions of years. Over time, many different creatures have lived and died in this area. Eventually their dried carcasses became covered by sand and sediment.

Eventually the whole animal would be buried under enough sand to turn it into a fossil. Many different types of extinct animals have been found buried in the rocks and sand of the valley. Try looking in the sand for fossils.

Make sure you don’t take anything from the dunes. All fossils found here are property of the US Government and you could be fined or prosecuted for taking them.

3. Running Obstacle Courses

The sand dunes are a perfect place to set up an obstacle course. You can build jumps, ramps and other fun things in the sand. This is a great activity to do with a group of people.

You could also try doing things in the dark, like running through an obstacle course with a flashlight.

4. Camping on the Dunes

Bring your tent or sleeping bag out to the dunes and camp out under the stars. Take along some marshmallows for roasting over the fire. You can even make S’mores!

Remember to pack out everything you take in.

5. Stargazing

The desert is an excellent place to look at the stars. The lack of light pollution out in the middle of the dunes makes the night sky seem more vast and spectacular than ever before. Lay down on the sand and stare upward for hours.

6. Sand Boarding

What? You’ve never heard of sand boarding?

Well, you’re in luck because we’re about to teach you all about it. All you need is your skateboard, a sandbox and some sand dunes. First, find the tallest sand dune you can. You may need to walk for a while to find the right one. When you find it, you need to start at the bottom and ride your board up to the top. Then you’re going to ride straight down the other side of the dune. This is where experience with riding downhill will come in handy. Don’t try this at home!

Riding a Sand Dune

If you do this correctly, you’ll ride all the way from the top of the dune to the bottom, almost to the bottom of the next sand dune. You can try to ride from one dune to the next but it takes a lot of skill and most of the time you’ll end up right at the bottom of the first dune again.

7. Sand Castles

This is a classic. Every kid loves to build sand castles! Even if you don’t have any toys to play with in the sand, you can always just build majestic castles like the ancient kings and queens of old!

The only limit is your own imagination!

8. Sand Art

Making sand art is a great way to spend a day at the beach. If you find a nice flat area of sand with no pebbles or shells, you can draw pictures with just wet sand. You can create anything you want!

This is also a great project for kids because it helps them develop fine motor skills.

Remember that the key to creating great sand art is wetting your sand in the right way. If you just pour a whole bunch of water on it, you’ll end up with a big puddle. But if you wet your sand in layers, it will hold its shape.

Sand art takes a lot of patience and practice, but the finished product is well worth it.

9. Checking Out the Wildlife

Most people don’t think of the desert as being a great place for wildlife, but in reality, deserts can have thriving ecosystems with a wide variety of animals.

Take a look around you. You’ll probably see some lizards sunning themselves on the rocks. They probably won’t go very far from the heat of the sun so you should be able to easily spot them.

There are also many types of small burrowing animals like jackrabbits, ground squirrels and kangaroo rats that live in the desert. Try to find one of their tunnels. Then put your ear close to the sand around the entrance and listen.

You should be able to hear the little animal inside.

10. Hiking

The mountains in the distance look like they’d be a fun place to explore. You’ve always wanted to climb a mountain. This would probably be the closest you’ll ever get though, so you decide to give it a try.

After a long walk over the hot sand, you finally reach the base of the mountain. As you climb, the air becomes noticeably cooler. You look down and realize just how far up you are!

It takes many hours to reach the top. By the time you get there, the sun is beginning to set. You’ve never seen a more beautiful sunset in your life.

The reds, oranges and purples streaked across the sky are unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

The way down is even harder than the way up. You are incredibly tired when you finally reach your campsite. All you want to do is collapse into bed.
