What’s So Great About Coconut Water?
Coconut water is one of the most popular drinks in the world. It contains high amounts of potassium, magnesium, calcium and vitamin C. Most importantly it contains electrolytes which are essential for maintaining normal bodily functions such as blood pressure, heart rate and digestion. These electrolytes are lost when you sweat or exercise so drinking coconut water helps prevent dehydration. When you consume coconut water regularly it will help improve your overall health and well being.
The Benefits Of Drinking Coconut Water Daily:
It prevents dehydration and improves hydration levels. It helps reduce inflammation and relieve pain associated with various conditions such as arthritis, headaches, joint pains, backaches, migraines and many others. It reduces cholesterol levels and aids in lowering the risk of heart disease. It helps lower triglycerides (bad) and increase HDL (good). It helps prevent osteoporosis.
It helps prevent diabetes. It helps treat diarrhea. It helps treat constipation.
How Much Should You Drink Of Coconut Water To Get All The Health Benefits?
Drinking coconut water daily will help maintain healthy skin, hair and nails. A cup of coconut water contains around 150mls of liquid and that is enough to get all the benefits mentioned above from it. You can add some lime or lemon juice to enhance the flavor.
Watch Out For The Sugar!
Coconut water contains a natural sugar called ‘fructose’. We all know that too much sugar is bad for you and will cause type 2 diabetes, obesity and all other kinds of related illnesses. One regular size coconut water (200ml) contains around 10g of sugar which is quite high. However the fructose in coconut water is more easily metabolized than high fructose corn syrup. This means that your body can better control your blood sugar levels and you don’t have to worry about it.
Is It Good To Drink Coconut Water Everyday?
Drinking a couple of glasses of coconut water every day can help improve your overall heath. It is best to drink it straight rather than adding it into your foods as this will only increase the amount of sugar you take in. Certain companies have started to sell flavored coconut water but this is not recommended as the added sugars will only do your body more harm than good.
The liquid content in the coconut water will regulate your bowel movements. Most people consume beverages that have a low liquid content, such as coffee and alcohol which can lead to problems with bowel regularity. Coconut water is known to help correct this problem. If you are suffering from a stomach bug or diarrhea, coconut water can help alleviate the problem by replacing lost liquids until you feel better.
Should You Add Coconut Water To Your Meals?
You can add a little coconut water to some of your meals to improve the taste and add more moisture in your system. Adding it to your breakfast smoothie or dessert recipes is a great way to get those much needed electrolytes in your diet. The liquid from the coconut water can also be used when cooking rice. It helps keep the grains separate and increases the flavor.
Expect to pay around $2.00 to $3.00 per young coconut and $1.00 to $1.50 per mature coconut depending on where you shop.
It might seem a little more expensive than your average fruit but you can rest assured that it is well worth the money you spend on it. At least one coconut should last you more than a week and provide enough liquid to satisfy your immediate needs.
A young coconut will typically yield around 300 milliliters of liquid and a mature one will give you around 450 milliliters. As a general rule, the green outer layer of a coconut is usually around 1 year old, the light brown layer is around 2 years old and the dark brown or almost black layer means that it is around 3 years or older.
You can pick the color that you prefer or just go with what is cheapest that day. Do not worry too much about the age as long as it has no leaks and sounds solid when you shake it. You can even drink straight from the coconut if you don’t have a glass at hand. It is important that you scrub it well before piercing the soft inner shell with a nail or knife to prevent bacteria from growing inside.
The liquid from a young coconut is typically a light color while the liquid from a mature one is a little darker. You can even find some mature coconuts that have a very dark liquid. This has more to do with how the nut was kept than how old it is. Some people like the taste of young coconut water better since it is sweeter but they are harder to find and more expensive than their older counterparts.
What Should You Do If Your Coconut Has A Leak?
The liquid from a leaking coconut is not safe to drink. The hole or leak could be a potential entry point for bacteria that can make you sick. It is important that you discard any leaking coconuts and not pass them on to others.
How To Store Coconut Water
Coconut water has an indefinite shelf life as long as you keep it stored in a dry location away from direct sunlight. It is also a good idea to keep it away from heat sources like heating vents or appliances. Do not freeze coconut water. It can become a solid block of ice and make it difficult to access the liquid when you are ready to use it.
The liquid will separate inside the coconut oil and water. This is very common and does not mean that it is spoiled in any way. All you need to do is gently shake the coconut back and forth a few times to mix it back together before opening it up.
Where Can You Find Fresh Coconuts?
Coconuts are available in most specialty and international grocery stores. You can find them in the baking section and they will typically be displayed near the dried fruits and nuts. They should also be stocked in the refrigerated section next to the fresh juices.
If you are having difficulty finding a fresh coconut, try looking in the phone book for stores that sell Asian or Mexican foods. Some of these types of specialty markets are more likely to carry them than your typical grocery store.
Always choose coconuts that are heavy for their size. Some have very thick brown husks so it can be difficult to tell how thick it really is unless you pierce through the outermost layer. The thicker the husk, the juicier and softer the flesh will be.
You can typically find fresh young coconuts in areas with a large Asian population. These specialty markets are also more likely to have the tools you need to get to the liquid inside such as hammers, knives and screwdrivers. They can range in price from $2 to $10 depending upon the size.
Look in the freezer section for packets of coconut water ice. These are typically made from concentrate and loaded with sugar and other ingredients you might not want. There are also some brands that are 100% natural and taste much better. These packs are great to keep on hand for survival type situations but they can be quite expensive to use on a regular basis.
