Kettlebells are the most popular weight training equipment in the world. They have been used for centuries in many different cultures around the globe. These ancient tools were originally developed for military purposes but they have since become very popular among bodybuilders and fitness enthusiasts worldwide. There are several types of kettlebells available today including traditional metal ones, plastic ones, and even wooden ones. But there is one type which is still considered to be a “classic” – the steel kettles!
The Steel Kettlebell
Steel kettlebells are one of the oldest types of weights available. They were first invented in 1885 by George Ebersole, a former American army officer. His invention was based on the idea that if you put heavy objects into a circular motion, it would cause them to move faster than they could otherwise.
This concept is called centrifugal force and it is what makes these old-fashioned steel kettle bells so powerful when used properly.
There are two main advantages of using a steel kettlebell over other types of kettlebells:
They weigh less than their lighter counterparts. They do not rust or corrode like some other kinds of kettlebells.
It is important to note that steel kettle bells are made from high quality alloy steel and they will last for years. If you find a good one, you can even pass it on to your grand children.
They are not as common as they once were but you can still find them at some sporting goods stores and military surplus stores. Here is a list of some of the most popular places to look:
Military Surplus Stores: These stores are probably the best place to buy traditional kettlebells. They are sometimes referred to as “drag” or “field” ketlebells. Look for ones that do not have any rust on them and that are fairly smooth.
These are the highest quality traditional kettlebells. Expect to pay between $5 and $15 per kettlebell.
Garage Sales: You can sometimes find traditional kettlebells at a garage sale. People sell them for all different prices so you will have to keep an eye out for a good deal. Watch out for rust and make sure that there are no large dents in the side.
If you are really lucky, you might even find a “heavier” one than normal. Traditional kettlebells come in 8, 12, 16, and 20kg (18, 24, 32, and 40lb) sizes so you might find one that is heavier than normal.
Auction Websites: If you are an avid online shopper, you might find traditional kettlebells for sale on auction websites. They usually sell for between $5 and $20 each. The sizes will vary but they will usually be fairly accurate.
As you can see, traditional kettlebells are fairly easy to find. Their popularity is starting to rise again so you shouldn’t have much trouble locating them at your local sporting goods store or military surplus store. Just make sure that you pick the right size for your needs.
The Rubber Kettlebell
Rubber kettlebells are fairly new to the market but they have already started to gain a following among crossfitters and athletes. They are different from traditional kettlebells because they are made out of rubber instead of metal. Although rubber doesn’t weigh as much as metal, it has several advantages of its own.
For one thing, it can withstand weather conditions and temperature changes much better than metal. It also has a certain “give” to it that makes it easier on the hands and more comfortable to use.
Rubber kettlebells have only been around since 2002 so they are still fairly uncommon. You won’t find them at your local sporting goods store and you probably won’t find them at a military surplus store. The best place to look is on online auction websites where they sell for between $15 and $60 each, depending on their weight.
Rubber kettlebells are not quite as accurate as traditional metal ones but they still give you a good idea of what you can handle. If you don’t have the money to invest in traditional kettlebells, then rubber might be your best bet. It is also a good idea to buy one of each so you can get familiar with both types.
If you are in the market for rubber rather than traditional metal kettlebells, make sure that you buy from a reputable company. Some of the cheaper models have started to fall apart after being used a few times. If you are going to be swinging a heavy object in your hand, you definitely want to make sure it is well made and durable.
